Overview

The Flood Control Department is dedicated to safeguarding the community by managing and maintaining critical infrastructure designed to prevent flooding. Our primary objectives include:

  • Drainage Maintenance: We ensure that drainage systems remain clear and functional by regularly inspecting, cleaning, and maintaining drainage pipes using specialized equipment like Vac Trucks.
  • Empire Floodgate Operations: Our team is responsible for the operation and upkeep of the Empire Floodgate, a crucial barrier in managing water levels and protecting areas from potential flooding.
  • Pumping Station Management: We oversee the operation and maintenance of the drainage pumping stations, which play a vital role in efficiently removing stormwater from within the levee system, preventing overflow and flooding during heavy rains.

Through these efforts, the Flood Control Department works tirelessly to minimize flood risks and maintain the safety and well-being of our community.

The drainage pumping system of Plaquemines Parish consists of 16 major sites throughout the parish, most of which have multiple pumps.

Operators work eight-hour days during the regular workweek, are on twenty-four-hour calls otherwise and are responsible for monitoring both rainfall amounts and canal levels. Normally, one full-time operator is assigned to each station.
